Panel Member: Karen Stanley
I am a former teacher and Assistant Headteacher of 20 years. I worked extensively with vulnerable and hard to reach pupils particularly in areas of deprivation. I was responsible for the 1:1 tutoring of several students with EBD, SEMH and AEN; particularly those in the care system and who had been excluded from mainstream provision. My passions have always been inclusion and mental health and wellbeing through creative teaching, experiential learning and empowering pupils to make the best use of their natural strengths and talents. I am now a ten-times published author writing women's fiction and children's fiction and poetry; often with a strong educational theme or moral. I spent three years managing the educational outreach of a large water company delivering STEM activities around water conservation and again, empowering pupils at risk of exclusion. I now coach new and blossoming writers to realise their writing dreams and run creative writing workshops in schools, libraries and fostering agencies. I host an educational website full of creative ideas and resources for teachers and educators, making cross-curricular links, promoting mindfulness and the power of nature and the environment for emotional and cognitive development. I have an MSc in Environmental Conservation and am a huge advocate of outdoor learning, particularly for pupils struggling within the classroom environment. I offer planning and INSET support to my school members. A recent member described my website as 'cross-curricular gold' which was absolutely the best compliment I could have received! I am an Enterprise Advisor for a special secondary school in Canterbury and an ambassador for Worldly Wise; an organisation that offers support to young people who may be facing life-path challenges.
